Personal Development

Personal Development is integral to our provision. Instilling our four core values of High Standards, Empathy, Resilience and Emotional Response through our innovative Personal Development Curriculum, Pastoral Care and Therapeutic Approach ensures our learners are equipped with the social skills, emotional understanding and coping mechanisms they need to be successful in their Post 16 pathways and beyond.

We do things differently HERE

- High Standards   - Empathy  - Resilience   E - Emotional Response

Personal Development Curriculum

Through our innovative Personal Development Curriculum we ensure that all our learners at Kassia Academy have the opportunity to develop key skills away from the classroom through a wide variety of extra-curricular experiences, trips and activities that they may not ordinarily get the chance to do.

Duke of Edinburgh

Duke of Edinburgh

Duke of Edinburgh is currently available as a qualification for all KS4 learners. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition or about being first. It’s all about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries.

Our D of E programme aims to improve our learners self-esteem and build confidence. They also gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication and drive.

As part of the qualification our learners have carried out a number of activities which have included cooking, orienteering, sports - dodgeball, football, golf, rugby, table tennis and boxing. We have also carried out a number of walks helping our learners prepare for their camping expedition at the end of the year.

Grow Your Own Community Project

Grow Your Own Community Project

Our Learners gain so much from working outdoors and engaging in practical activities. As a result Kassia Academy teamed up with a local allotment. Located nearby in Salford; learners have full access to their own allotment and are encouraged to visit weekly to plant and tend to vegetables, maintain beds and plants and look after chickens. The allotment is directly linked to a local foodbank and produce is taken there and given back to the local community.

Watersports Programmes

Watersports Programmes

We are currently part of the “Oarsome Project” which provides learners with the opportunity to attend Warrington Rowing Club to learn how to row, build team spirit and experience a new sport.

Alongside this Kassia Academy works closely with Salford Sailing Group and learners regularly attend the club for kayaking and other water based activities such as raft building and swimming. This is a fantastic resource and something learners really enjoy.

Take a look at our raft building here!

Dallaglio Rugby Works

Dallaglio Rugby Works

We have been lucky enough to work with Dallaglio Rugby Works for several years. Sport leaders come into school each week and deliver group and 1:1 activities based around the team spirit and skills of the sport Rugby. Learners in all centres are encouraged to take part in Rugby Works and it is a very popular activity amongst our learners.

Football League

Football League

Kassia academy is part of the Merseyside EBD League which is made up of 15 schools competing in a league format at KS3 (years 7, 8, 9) and KS4 (years 10, 11). Each team plays their opponents once in a tournament type format once a month. The top 4 teams from each season will then play in a knock out semi-final with the winners meeting in the grand final.

This is a great chance for our children to work as a team and develop their leadership and communication skills as well as building their resilience that can then be transferred into everyday life.

Keeping Fit and Healthy

Keeping Fit and Healthy

As well as our onsite Gym our learners are enrolled at a local gym as part of their physical education curriculum. Learners complete a full induction and are taught how to strengthen specific muscle groups and raise general fitness levels. Learners love attending the gym it’s a great way to burn off some energy and let off steam. It’s also great for building relationships and its always great to see them encouraging one another through different activities.

Forest Schools

Forest Schools

Since joining Kings Academy Trust we have been given the fantastic opportunity to develop Kassia Academy into becoming a Forest School and train members of our staff as Forest School Practitioners.

Coming soon in September 2021 we are excited about working with Forest schools to enhance our Personal Development Curriculum and fully utilise the fabulous woodland area we have on our school site.

What is a Forest School?

Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It is a long-term program that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting.

Quality Forest School is delivery which holds to all six key principles that shape and govern the Forest School ethos. There are many forms of outdoor education and all have enormous value, however, Forest School is unique in its reach, delivery and effect.

These six principles are:

  1. Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.
  2. Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a lifelong relationship between the learner and the natural world.
  3. Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.
  4. Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
  5. Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
  6. Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners, who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.

Fundraising

Fundraising

Alongside the above personal development activities our learners are always very keen to fundraise for local charities and for projects in their own school. Most recently learners have worked hard to raise money to donate to a local foodbank to support families affected by Covid 19 through sponsored activities and car washing. Their next project is to raise funds to create an allotment on our school site with a view to growing fresh vegetables to donate to our local foodbank. The dedication our learners show to these projects never ceases to amaze us and is typical of the culture and spirit of Kassia learners.
